What is BALOO?

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is BSA’s national training program to prepare Cub Scout leaders to take their Cub Scout packs overnight camping. Packs must have a BALOO trained leader present on all overnight campouts. The course also provides a good grounding in Scouting’s Outdoor Program, and helps leaders leverage the Outdoor Program to make their packs stronger and more resilient.

Who should attend BALOO?

BALOO is for Cub Scout leaders working with a Cub Scout pack that wants to camp. Any adult registered with the pack can complete the training and serve as a BALOO trained leader for any pack, but Cubmasters and Den Leaders will find the training especially helpful for their work with Scouts. BALOO training never expires and does not need to be renewed.

When is BALOO Offered?

Courses are offered in the spring and fall, with a winter course planned for 2023 as well. Locations rotate between Stearns Scout Camp, Fred C. Andersen Scout Camp, Phillippo Scout Camp, and Rum River Scout Camp to make the course accessible to as many people across the council as possible. The course is composed of BSA national online prerequisite materials completed before the in person meetings, a short online Zoom session with your campmates to cover some of the talking portions prior to camp (freeing up camp time for skills sessions), and a 24 hour camping trip including an overnight stay.

Volunteer as Staff

We are looking for BALOO trained Cub Scout leaders to join our staff as instructors. Our instructors teach outdoor skills during the round robin sessions and group sessions on the camping trip, and we are hoping to bring enough staff on board to have a training team for each region of the council to make courses more accessible every season. This is a great place to teach skills you love, and you don’t have to teach everything. You don’t have to have a Cub Scout to teach Cub Scout leaders, so this is also a fun opportunity for adults whose scouts are older. Contact one of the people below for more information.
