Congratulations on Retirement to Melinda

Staff Changes in September!

Melinda Inman has been providing the support and customer service for the Explorers and Explorer posts within Northern Star Council for over 12 years. During her time on our staff her service area has covered nearly all points in our council, with nearly 90 posts and 2,000 Explorers.

She provided leadership and support to recruitment "First Nighters", gathering student interest surveys to identify interested young people, and starting New Explorer posts. She works with all posts to renew their leaders and youth every year.

Melinda has worked to provide training for all leaders of these posts, including Exploring Basic Training and Youth Protection Training. Every year she has a team of volunteers who raise over $30,000 to support Exploring in Northern Star Council, and every year she is the staff support person for the largest volunteer run event for young people in our state: The Minnesota Law Enforcement Competition, which has over 700 in attendance.

And this is not all - Melinda has been the staff advisor to the NSC Shooting Sports Committee, the NSC Protestant Committee on Scouting, and has completed Wood Badge training and was selected to be on both Grey Wolf (Junior Leader Training Course) and Wood Badge Staff.

Please join us in thanking Melinda for her service to the thousands of youth who have had a memorable and valuable experience in Exploring while she has been on our staff, and also in wishing her the very best as she begins a new phase in her life. Melinda's last day with NSC is August 31, 2017.

Brian Swerine Melinda's departure has left us a vacancy, and we began the search for her replacement immediately upon hearing of Melinda's decision to retire.

We are pleased to announce that Brian Swerine will be our next Senior Exploring Executive. Brian is a quiet kind of guy, so I will share a bit of his background, which helped us to make our decision:

  • Brian has experience - he was a Scout as a youth in our council
  • Brian also served in two other councils before coming to us.
  • While in Central Minnesota Council, he was the District Executive who also had Exploring in his area, including the Brainerd Police Department and BrainerdFire Department.
  • While a Senior District Executive in Gamehaven Council, Brian also had Exploring in his area, including a Medical Post at Mayo Hospital and a computer Technology Post at IBM.
  • Brian has already worked with several of our law enforcement agencies while he was our Senior District Executive in Juvenile Diversion.

Because Brian is currently servicing district's which ahve a lot of SNFS plans for September, Brian will be taking this position on 100% on October 1. Until then, he will be meeting with Melinda and attending a few events to get him up to speed for his hew role in our council.

Please join us in congratulating Brian and wishing him the best as he starts the next adventure in his career.
