Bee's Camp, Make Every Day Earth Day

Let's All Continue To Do Our Part

On April 22nd 2017, Base Camp was buzzing with volunteers for Earth Day. A day full of activity and learning. With the help of our volunteers, Base Camp did its part to raise awareness for our native pollinator habitats here in Minnesota. A lot was accomplished and there is still more that we can all do every day to give back to our Earth!

How we gave back here at Base Camp

Program Director David Donovan led an educational "Leave No Trace" hike where we cleaned up the surrounding area.

Everyone pitched in to plant native seeds and construct an outdoor garden.

We also built "Bee's Camp!" this structure provides shelter to the hard working pollinators that keep nature going.

As a bonus, the youth who donated their time got to climb the rock wall, and take home some seeds to help the habitat at their homes!

We Had A Special Guest!

Joining Base Camp was Bee Kind MN, a local non-profit founded by Boy Scout Nikolas Liepins of Troop 9045, and his classmates. Their organization provides education about pollinators and gives tips on what we can all do to help out! Check out their website at Even if you couldn't attend here are some ways that you can help "Bee Kind" to our planet!

Plant a Pollinator Garden

By planting native seeds that are pollinator friendly, you can help maintain the habitat that allows bees and other insects to flourish and do their job. Learn more about native plants at

Stop Using Pesticides

Bees are suffering a rapid decline in their populations due to pesticide use, urban food deserts, and the lack of safe housing. This decline is leading to a decline in plant pollination. Without bees we cannot have the following food items, and more:

  • Almonds
  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Allspice
  • Onions
  • Avocados
  • Celery
  • Lemon
  • Cucumber
  • Much More

Build a Bee House

Bee Kind provides detailed instructions on building a Bee House, just like our "Bee's Camp", at These houses provide shelter for the pollinators and a safe place to lay their eggs.
