Sea Scouts Attend National Training

Weeklong Courses on 40' Yawl and 65' Powerboat

Sea Scouts Matt Verweg and Zach Hofius of Ship 248 had unique shipboard adventures this summer! Both attended separate SEAL (Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership Training) courses on opposite coasts. Matt’s course took place on a 65’ powerboat based out of Puget Sound in Seattle and Zach’s course was on a 40’ Yawl from Long Island Sound.

The courses consist of five to seven youth with a Course Skipper and two instructors.  Modules are offered on specific leadership skills including Motivating, Counseling, Goal Setting, Communicating, Planning & Preparing and Managing, Supervising & commanding. Participants complete exercises designed to show mastery of the concepts taught while under the leadership of the boatswain of the day (and each takes a turn at this leadership position.

“The instructors were great!” said ship 248's Boatswain, Zach. “It was their 13th year and they were very experienced and able to answer our questions. I was surprised at how much responsibility we were given to sail our two-masted Yawl and really enjoyed meeting my fellow Sea Scouts from around the nation.”

Matt currently serves as Ship 248’s Boatswain’s Mate and learned skills he could immediately use. “I particularly liked the Managing, Supervising & Commanding, Goal Setting and Counseling classes, plus the many drills we did to handle emergency situations." Said Matt. "These would be a good addition to our ship program. The most complex was the Man overboard while experiencing an engine fire.”

Sea Scouts is one of the lesser-known, but exciting BSA programs for young men and women ages 14 to 20. The pillars of the program are seamanship, Scouting, service and social, with its own advancement and certification programs. One of ship 248's recent program highlights was this summer's long sail. The Ship traveled by sailboat and powerboat from Bayport down the Mississippi to Lake Pepin, where they enjoyed a few days of boating activities and water-skiing before sailing back home.  The Ship is chartered to St Stephens Lutheran Church in West St Paul and welcomes new members. Here is more information on the ship and how to join:
